FCC Experiments Mean Your New Phone Number Could be an IP Address

All of us have been exposed to the standard that is a phone number. That 10 digit number that connects you to your friends and family. Before that, it was only 7 digits and even less if you go back far enough. Now things are starting to change.

The FCC has given the go ahead for phone companies to explore the possibilities of using IP address numbers to replace the existing standard. Instead of your phone number looking like 212-555-5555, it could very well look something like 00.000.00.000. This may seem far-fetched and a bit unrealistic, but more and more phone numbers are issued everyday and there is only a finite amount of combinations available before we run out. Switching to an IP-based system only makes sense.

Here in the U.S., AT&T and Verizon are on board for the preliminary trials. The main point to focus on would be how well this new system could be implemented into our existing system and eventually, take over for it.

Granted this kind of change will take time to test and implement, but I think it’s something that has to be done. We’re running out of room so to speak, and change is needed in order for us, as consumers, to be delivered the services that today’s technology-based world demands.
