HTC One is “Impossible to Repair”

Every now and then smartphones are dropped and you may end up with a broken screen or a scratched back or a few dings here and there.

HTC One repair

No one likes a broken phone but if you do end with one then a few of us do prefer to fix it on our own, well in case you plan on buying the HTC One, the One got a rating of 1 on 10 in ifixit’s repairability score (10 being the easiest). No, we are not saying that don’t buy the HTC One, we are just letting you know the facts.

The One has a unibody design and the display cannot be changed without removing the rear case (similar to the iPhone 5).  We will quote ifixit here with there findings and why they gave it a 1 on 10 or nearly impossible to fix it.

  • Very, very difficult (possibly impossible?) to open the device without damaging the rear case. This makes every component extremely difficult to replace.
  • The battery is buried beneath the motherboard and adhered to the midframe, hindering its replacement.
  • The display assembly cannot be replaced without removing the rear case—this will make the most common repair, a damaged screen, nearly impossible.
  • Copper shielding on many components is difficult to remove and replace.

The only positive comment for the whole teardown was “Solid external construction improves durability” which we all are well aware of, but a phone which can’t be popped open without damaging the aluminum body is a no go for me, we wonder how HTC would fix the phone in case someone wants it repaired by them. HTC’s prices on repair for the One are gong to be sky high is our guess.
