T-Mobile Doubles Down on Simple Choice Data Allotment

T-Mobile made their Simple Choice plans even more attractive by doubling the high-speed (read as not throttled) data allotments for their base Simple Choice plan. This is good for both existing and new customers and goes into effect on March 23. The base Simple Choice plan is the same $50 for the first line, $30 for the second and $10 for each line after that up to five total. This includes the same unlimited calls, texts and unlimited (but throttled) data. However, your high-speed data and tethering allotment doubles from 500MB to 1GB – one of the better deals out there.

If you need more high-speed data or tethering, then you can add it per line. The next step up from the included 1GB is now 3GB (up from 2.5GB) for an additional $10, 5GB for $20 (this is new), or unlimited high-speed data with 5GB tethering for $30. This last one is a bit of a pill to swallow since it was previously $20 to avoid the throttle and included a generous 2.5GB of tethering which is more than enough to meet most tethering needs.

To see how this works out, a couple with two lines can get the 3GB plans and keep their bill right at $100. An example family of four could go with 5GB for Dad, 3GB for Mom and keep the base Simple Choice plan for the kiddos landing them at $130 before taxes. Unlimited 4G on the new plan for a couple lands at $140. Five lines with Unlimited 4G will cost you $260.

The new allotments will go into effect automatically on March 23 for all customers on Simple Choice plans except for those on the Unlimited 4G plan. Those customers with Unlimited 4G will remain in their existing plan unless they call T-Mobile to switch. There has also been an increase in free global coverage and T-Mobile customers will now get free international text messaging from the U.S. to “most” other counties starting April 1.

Does this make T-Mobile more attractive to switch from another carrier? If you are an existing T-Mobile customer, especially those on the Unlimited 4G plan, what do you think about the change?
