Trouble in Candyland

As some of you may know, the makers of Candy Crush Saga have stirred up some controversy with its filing for trademark and eventual granting of trademark for the word “candy”.  Well it turns out that a game called Candy Swipe had filed for trademark 2 years before Candy Crush Saga even existed back in 2010.

Now, King, the maker of Candy Crush Saga, is looking to invalidate the trademark request of Candy Swipe in order to prevent them from “benefiting” from the profits King has accumulated from its Candy Crush Saga game.

Below is an a link to an open letter from Candy Swipe maker to King:

Here is a direct quote from that open letter:

I created my game CandySwipe in memory of my late mother who passed away at an early age of 62 of leukemia. I released CandySwipe in 2010 five months after she passed and I made it because she always liked these sorts of games. In fact, if you beat the full version of the android game, you will still get the message saying “…the game was made in memory of my mother, Layla…” I created this game for warmhearted people like her and to help support my family, wife and two boys 10 and 4. Two years after I released CandySwipe, you released Candy Crush Saga on mobile; the app icon, candy pieces, and even the rewarding, “Sweet!” are nearly identical.

Now, as it looks to me, King has copied Candy Swipe outright and is now trying to silence Candy Swipe’s maker, Runsome Apps Inc., so as to not get itself into any trouble in court with a legal battle.

This is just my opinion, but King should knock off the bully attitude and admit their folly. Whats your take on this? Leave us your opinions below.
